ALL RELATIVE: The roster for the JetHawks includes three players with major league bloodlines. . . . Outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. is the son of the former Houston Astros star; first baseman Shawn Buhner is the brother of Seattle Mariners’ right fielder Jay Buhner, and catcher Dusty Wathan is the son of former major league catcher and manager John Wathan.

WATCH FOR: Of the 25 players, the one who will certainly attract the most attention is Cruz. . . . After an All-American career at Rice University in Houston, Cruz was signed by the Mariners, the major league sponsor of the JetHawks, last year for $1.25 million, a team record. Catch him in Lancaster while you can, though. The Mariners want him in Seattle soon.

NO KIDDING: The Rev. Armando X. Ochoa, a Los Angeles auxiliary bishop based in Mission Hills, was a little concerned about the timing of the Vatican’s announcement that he will become the bishop of the diocese of El Paso, Tex. (B1). . . . Because of a scheduling conflict, Rome put out the word Monday--April 1. “I am quite sure you are wondering, ‘Is this one big April Fool’s joke or what?’ ” the new bishop quipped.
