Detroit celebrated a month of success, then the Sharks celebrated sending the Red Wings to a rare failure Tuesday night when Darren Turcotte’s goal 1:45 into the third period snapped a tie and started San Jose toward a 6-3 victory at home.

The Red Wings’ unbeaten streak was ended at 13 games, 12 of them victories, and it had lasted exactly one month.

Jamie Baker scored twice and Owen Nolan and Jan Caloun also scored for the Sharks.

Vladimir Konstantinov had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who remain three victories shy of breaking the all-time record of 60, held by the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens.

Philadelphia 6, New York Islanders 2--The Flyers scored three short-handed goals at Uniondale, N.Y., in sending the Islanders to their 10th loss in a row. Philadelphia closed within one point of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Eastern Conference lead.

New York Rangers 3, New Jersey 1--Goalie Mike Richter turned back 37 shots for the Rangers, and the Devils fell a little lower in their quest to avoid repeating the dubious accomplishment of the 1969-70 Montreal Canadiens, the last team to miss the playoffs after winning the Stanley Cup.

NHL Notes

New York Islander center Todd Bertuzzi was suspended for three games for knocking down an official and New York Ranger right wing Shane Churla for two games after their fight Sunday. . . . The Broward County commissioners voted to build a new $171 million arena north of Miami for the Florida Panthers.
