UC Irvine Wins 20-Team Golf Tournament

UC Irvine edged UCLA by two strokes, 896-898, for first place in the 20-team tournament at Coto de Caza. UCLA’s Mike Miller shot a one-under 71 in the final round and finished the 54-hole tournament at four-under 212. Teammate Eric Lohman was second, shooting a final-round 72 to finish at one-under 215.

Irvine’s Kevin Yamauchi shot a 77 to finish fourth at 217.

In nonconference baseball:

Long Beach State 3, Fresno State 2--Wil Skett and Casey Martin scored on Neil Sauerheber’s seventh-inning double to give Long Beach State (22-12) the lead.

Dan Thomas picked up his first victory for the 49ers, pitching an inning of perfect relief.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 7-1, Cal Baptist 0-4--Jen Houston gave up five hits and struck out six to earn the victory for SCC (16-14-2, 6-2) in the first game. Michelle Murie had two hits and three RBIs and Jen Caruso had three hits for the Vanguards.

Monique Salas pitched a three-hitter in the second game for Cal Baptist (11-14, 5-5), striking out six and allowing no earned runs.

In a nonconference doubleheader:

Chapman 2-8, Calvin (Mich.) 0-1--Jessamine Maiben hit two home runs and allowed no earned runs to win the second game for host Chapman (23-6). Christy Guidorizzi pitched a two-hitter, posting her ninth shutout, for Chapman in the first game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 6, Cal Baptist 1--David Robbins swept Cal Baptist’s Kris Mueller, 6-0, 6-0, for Southern California Colllege (10-2, 3-1). Teammates Paulo Barriga and Jeff Baker also swept their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0.

Robbins and doubles partner Ryan Lewis won at No. 1 doubles, 8-1.
