Supervisor Reacts to City’s Criticism

Responding to criticism by one councilman, Ventura County Supervisor John K. Flynn has written a letter to the Oxnard City Council, saying the slam on county government and him in particular “is not justified.”

Flynn’s missive follows Councilman Andres Herrera’s public comments that county government does not care enough about Oxnard’s problems, including traffic problems at Ventura Freeway intersections. Herrera asked city staff members to study the possibility of letting Oxnard form its own county.

Delivered by a Flynn aide at Tuesday’s council meeting, the letter said the county was never a party in finding a solution to traffic jams on the Ventura Freeway overpass at Rose Avenue.

“The city of Oxnard assumed that responsibility,” Flynn wrote. He said Oxnard took on that burden when it approved a 1986 environmental study that said the road improvements would be paid for through a special tax assessed against nearby property owners.

The councilman Tuesday downplayed Flynn’s letter. “Apparently, [Flynn] was offended that he might have been accused of not doing enough for Oxnard,” Herrera said.

Herrera was a Flynn aide several years ago. Flynn represents the 5th Supervisorial District, which is primarily in Oxnard.
