Cypress Takes Desert Softball Tournament Title

Cypress scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings and pitcher Jamie Wilkes gave up only three singles Thursday to help the Chargers win the College of the Desert tournament championship game, 2-0, over Saddleback.

The Chargers (33-11-1) outscored their opponents, 33-1, in the six tournament games.

Christa Saindon hit her seventh home run, a Cypress single-season school record, in a 6-0 victory over Imperial Valley in the semifinals. Aimee Weathers hit a home run in Cypress’ 3-0 victory over Grossmont in the quarterfinals.

Cypress’ Shana Rizzo was the winning pitcher in both games against Imperial Valley and Grossmont, giving up only four hits in 14 innings.

Saddleback (24-6) reached the finals by defeating Southwestern, 3-2. Misty Thompson homered for the Gauchos in the semifinals.

In nonconference baseball:

Golden West 5, Mt. San Antonio 4--Todd Vorell had two hits and an RBI and Riley Breckenridge homered for Golden West (13-5).

In the Hancock tournament:

Cypress 10, L.A. Harbor 3--Kenny Granger had two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs for Cypress (26-8) in a pool-play game.
