Darcy Noricks, an Orange Coast College graduate, has been elected a 1996 Truman Scholar.

The program awards $30,000 scholarships to students pursuing careers in public service. Noricks was one of 200 finalists selected from 3,000 nominees for the award. She learned in March that she was one of the 60 winners, college officials said.

Noricks was nominated by several OCC professors and administrators, including Jeffrey M. Dimsdale, dean of student services, and speech professor Kat Carroll.

“We had complete faith in her,” Carroll said. “She’s one remarkable young woman. I was absolutely confident that she’d win the Truman Scholarship.”

Truman scholars are chosen on the basis of their leadership potential, academic performance and desire to serve the public good.

Noricks, who is now studying in Toulouse, France, was an intern at the White House last summer, where she did research for President Clinton’s foreign policy speeches. She intends to use her Truman scholarship to study international conflict resolution, college officials said.
