A 5-year-old Oxnard girl remained hospitalized in serious condition Tuesday, one day after a sports utility vehicle struck her as she was crossing the street. Authorities said the driver of the vehicle, who allegedly ran a red light, then caused a four-car accident.

Erica Trejo remained in the intensive care unit at St. John’s Regional Medical Center after sustaining a broken pelvis and leg and severe head lacerations.

Trejo, who was thrown about 15 feet, was the most seriously injured of six Oxnard residents hurt in the accident at the intersection of Channel Islands Boulevard and C Street, police said.

After the sports utility vehicle driven by Ernesto Iniguez, 19, of Oxnard struck the child, it hit a car and pickup truck traveling north on C Street, Officer Randy Latimer said. The pickup then rammed into another light truck ahead of it.

Injuries to the other motorists were minor.

The police investigation continues and Iniguez has not been cited, Latimer said.
