Oxnard College Plans Off-Campus Center

Oxnard College is moving forward with plans to reopen an off-campus center in Camarillo that will be bigger and offer more courses than the one it closed five years ago.

Trustees for the county’s community colleges Tuesday gave Oxnard College the go-ahead to lease a storefront at 2520 E. Los Posas Road in the Camarillo Village Square.

With five classrooms, including a computer lab, the center is expected to open in the fall with 34 classes ranging from speech to introductory computer courses.

Students will also be able to register, buy books, file financial aid forms or see an academic counselor at the center, said Ruth Hemming, interim president of the college.

“This is bigger and better in that sense,” she said. “We intend to do it right. There will be all new furnishings, a state-of-the-art computer lab. It will be a very nice facility.”

The previous Camarillo off-campus center--closed in 1991 because of budgets cuts--had one classroom and a small office.
