Schools / Education news : Students Help Set Up New Resource Center

Share

High school students wondering which college or university to consider now have a resource center at the public library, thanks to the John F. Kennedy High School chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America.

The new College Resource Center, which the group developed, contains books, pamphlets, course books and videos from about 80 colleges and universities across the United States. And the student organizers are adding more by the day, said their faculty advisor, Wilhemina Van Hunnick.

“A lot of kids want to go to college but don’t really know which ones might appeal to them,” Van Hunnick said. “This will help get sophomores and juniors to start looking at colleges instead of just waiting until their senior year.”

The items were solicited from universities and colleges by members of the student group, which organized the resource center with help from the library staff.

Kennedy High School does not have a place where students can research colleges and universities, Van Hunnick said. Students generally request information directly from the schools.

Putting the resource center in the La Palma public library “will give access to parents as well as students,” Van Hunnick added.
