Spring Sports : MISCELLANY

Wednesday was the first day of the monthlong spring signing period, and still there is no word on the future of basketball standout Olujimi Mann of Santa Ana Valley. The 6-4 point guard made a verbal commitment to UCLA last spring, but the Bruins withdrew their offer during the winter because of Mann’s academic troubles. He hasn’t yet academically qualified for a scholarship and may wind up at a junior college. . . . UCLA women’s basketball Coach Kathy Olivier completed one of the nation’s best recruiting efforts Wednesday by signing 6-5 center Janae Hubbard of Fresno, the Central Section girls’ player of the year. In November, Olivier signed four all-state players, including 6-3 center Maylana Martin of Perris, 6-1 forward Melanie Pearson of Irvine Woodbridge, 5-11 forward Marie Philman of Huntington Beach Edison and 6-0 forward Carly Funicello of Mission Hills Alemany. . . . New Pepperdine men’s basketball Coach Lorenzo Romar received a letter of intent from Kelvin Gibbs, a 6-7 forward from Bellflower who averaged 20 points last season. The Waves are still in the running for several others players, including 6-8 Pero Vasiljevic of Simi Valley and 6-7 Jarvis Turner of South Bakersfield.
