People / Spotlight on achievers : Police Honor 7 as ‘Crimebiters’

Though they describe themselves as ordinary residents, seven people honored by the Fountain Valley Police Department are exemplary citizens who played a significant role in helping nab suspects, officers said..

For their swift actions in reporting crimes in progress, the Police Department the seven “Crimebiter” awards at a recent City Hall ceremony.

Among those honored was Gilbert Orozco, 42, who was at work at Campbell Paint and Body in Fountain Valley when he noticed a stranger inside a co-worker’s truck. Orozco ran into the office and yelled for someone to call police.

He then went to the vehicle, where he saw a 17-year-old boy trying to steal the stereo. So the thief could not flee, Orozco and co-workers held the truck doors closed until officers arrived.

“We can’t take the law into our own hands,” said Orozco, an Orange resident, “but we can watch out for each other.”

Other Crimebiter award recipients were Michelle San Roman, Rosario Gonzalez, Rose Engel, Carolyn Loris, Pauline Bianchini and Joanie MacLean.
