Meeting to Examine HIV Prevention Plan

Share

AIDS service providers and community members will be able to voice their opinions about the county HIV prevention plan at a community forum Tuesday in Van Nuys.

“The plan is a unique document that was written by more than 40 people representing various communities and disciplines,” said Dredge Byung’chu Kang, who heads the HIV Prevention Planning Committee for the county Department of Health Services. “Many of its authors pioneered HIV prevention work in the county.”

The HIV prevention plan is a blueprint of prevention strategies and behavior modifications that “identify different target populations and their specific needs,” said Rise Phillips, an AIDS Program spokesman. It outlines strategies that are effective in preventing or limiting unsafe sexual behaviors and injection drug use. The plan is available to all social service agencies and concerned residents who work in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome prevention field.

The community’s views will be taken into consideration as the county updates the HIV prevention plan over the summer.

“We would like to hear what people are thinking about HIV prevention in general,” Phillips said.

The Van Nuys forum is one of 13 such meetings that will be held throughout the county in April and early May.

Tuesday’s meeting will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the United Way office, 6851 Lennox Ave. in Van Nuys.
