Sherman Oaks : Meeting Set to Discuss School Expansion Plan

Share

Like many area residents, Richard Close, president of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn., wants more information on the proposed expansion of the Buckley School before it becomes a reality.

The Sherman Oaks school, which has 750 students, plans an expansion that would accommodate another 150 students. Buckley would also like to change the terms of its conditional-use permit to add after-school activities.

The homeowners association will hold a community meeting Wednesday night, when Buckley’s headmaster, Walter Baumhoff, and school consultants will describe the proposal and answer questions.

Because of the private school’s proximity to homes in the neighborhood, Close said residents have had problems with students loitering and parking in residential areas surrounding the campus. Residents’ main concern, in a word, is traffic.

School officials have proposed the idea of shuttle buses to reduce traffic and parking headaches for homeowners. That sounds like a good idea to Close, but the association wants specific proposals.

“We like the school. We just want to make sure the expansion doesn’t cause problems. We’re not opposed to the plan. It’s too early for that. We just want information,” he said.

Wednesday’s meeting will begin at 8 p.m. at Glendale Federal Bank, 13300 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks.
