Arguments Begin in Sentencing of Ex-Rep. Walter Tucker III
Federal prosecutors on Monday began arguments in the sentencing of former Rep. Walter R. Tucker III, who was convicted in December of extortion and tax evasion.
Special Assistant U.S. Atty. Steven G. Madison told U.S. District Judge Conseulo B. Marshall that the former congressman, who resigned after his conviction, should be sentenced to 46 to 57 months in prison for accepting bribes. Madison said the judge should ignore Tucker’s pleas for mercy because he failed to accept responsibility for his actions.
“The problem is that without acceptance or remorse . . . the kind of mercy he’s asking for would be cheap and sentimental and undeserved,” Madison said.
The hearing will resume Wednesday.
