Council OKs Plans for 12 Movie Screens

A proposal to bring more stores and another multiscreen movie theater near Thousand Oaks’ bustling Moorpark Road shopping district won the City Council’s approval Tuesday night.

Council members unanimously approved plans for Plaza Nuevo, a 137,000-square-foot shopping center at Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Lombard Street.

The centerpiece of the plaza would be a 12-screen Edwards theater, located just a few blocks from the new Mann multiplex in the renovated Janss Marketplace.

Council members worried that Thousand Oaks, which has 16 movie screens, may soon become crowded with theaters. But that concern did not change their support for a project several said would help revitalize Thousand Oaks Boulevard.

“It will bring people to that portion of Thousand Oaks Boulevard, and that’s an important thing,” Councilwoman Judy Lazar said.

Acting on a suggestion from Councilwoman Elois Zeanah, council members asked city staff to research the number of movie screens Thousand Oaks could support.

The theater would form the center’s second floor. Restaurants and shops would fill the remainder of the space, with parking provided on rooftop and underground lots.
