Central Los Angeles : HIGH HOPES

Share

Ground was broken Thursday on what will be the permanent site of an alternative high school at Vermont Avenue and 85th Street in South Los Angeles.

The Youth Opportunities Unlimited Alternative High School is operating out of trailers across the street from the site of the new building. Officials expect the structure to be completed in nine to 12 months.

Students are former dropouts who voluntarily enrolled at the school, which is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s alternative education program.

“They have to want to be here,” said Principal Deborah Callahan.

Participants are between the ages of 14 and 21 and can receive a standard high school diploma or a high school equivalency degree, she said.

The school provides a more family-style atmosphere by offering an on-site day-care center for students and daily group discussions in place of traditional homerooms, Callahan said.
