Share

Ruth L. Horn, a longtime Ventura County resident and motel owner, has died. She was 95.

Born in Texas on May 5, 1900, Horn spent her youth in the Houston area, where she worked as a maid in a hotel that she later bought and managed.

During the Depression, she hitched a ride on a boxcar to Sacramento, looking for better work, said son-in-law Harry Lundgren. Horn went on to own three small hotels there. She married her second husband, Karl Horn, in the early 1940s and had one daughter.

The family moved to Ventura in 1948. Before retiring 30 years later, Horn owned and managed the Nightingale Motor Court and the City Center Motel, both in Ventura, and the Santa Paula Motel. Her husband died in 1978, and their daughter, Shirley Lundgren, died two weeks later.

Horn spent most of her time working, said Harry Lundgren.

“She was a workaholic,” he said. “Running a motel was a seven-day-a-week job for her.”

Horn is survived by a grandson, a great-grandson, and two great-great-granddaughters.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home.
