1st-Graders’ Quilts Teach Lessons in Love
Using brightly colored paints and fabric remnants, they spent nearly half a year in class creating their own personal quilts--nine squares each of creative invention including one with their own handprint.
Then, on Sunday, they gave them all away.
Part of a Sunday school lesson in giving, about 70 first-graders who attend St. Julie Billiart Church in Newbury Park each made a quilt for a terminally ill child. Last year, the class made quilts for babies with AIDS.
“They are learning how to love and care for people who are less fortunate,” said Sandy Salisbury, the church’s Sunday school coordinator.
On Sunday, the children displayed their handcrafted creations during mass. They will be donated to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles this week.
