Study Says Work Accidents Kill 220,000 Annually: The International Labor Organization said about six of every 100,000 workers worldwide die in accidents or from illness contracted at work. The U.N. agency said in a report to the World Congress on Safety and Health that the problem is growing in many countries. ILO Assistant Director-General Ali Taqi said the number of work-related accidents is running at an estimated 125 million a year around the globe. Although the problem is much worse in developing countries, no region of the world was spared. The ILO official said the risk of death is very high in some jobs, especially in the construction industry, where the rate of fatal accidents is higher than the average.
