El Dorado Knocks Off Katella, 9-1

Jerry Miller and Craig Patterson each hit three-run home runs to help El Dorado upset Katella, ranked second in Orange County, 9-1, Wednesday in an Empire League baseball game at El Dorado High.

Winning pitcher Jordan DeJong scattered five hits and Brandon Downing had four hits to lead El Dorado (12-9, 7-3 in league), which plays Katella (16-5, 8-2) again Friday at Boysen Park.

In other Empire League games:

Cypress 16, Century 4--Brian Dinley had three hits and pitched five innings to earn his fourth victory and J.R. Johnson had three hits and three RBIs for host Cypress (17-3, 9-1).

Loara 15, Kennedy 13--Carlos Ortiz hit a two-run homer, a two-run double and a two-run single for Loara (12-8, 4-6).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 8, Buena Park 4--Jeremy Weinberg had two hits and three RBIs for Sonora (16-3-1, 8-2). Ernesto Jaime had three hits for Buena Park (8-10-1, 3-6-1).

Troy 14, La Habra 3--Chad Elliott had four hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs for host Troy (8-10-2, 2-6-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 4, Rancho Alamitos 3 (8 innings)--Paul Tessier’s fielder’s choice scored Jon Fenoglio with the winning run in the eighth for Pacifica (1-8-1, 6-2).

In the Golden West League:

Servite 3, Saddleback 2--Marty Hayes’ RBI single in the bottom of the seventh scored Ryan Brown for Servite (14-7, 7-3).

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 1, Savanna 0--Justin Reding hit a triple in the fourth inning to score Greg Young and winning pitcher Dennis Loza scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked none for host Magnolia (13-4, 8-2).

Western 2, Brea Olinda 1--Bret Halbert won his own game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Anthony Ortiz. Halbert struck out seven and walked two, pitching his fourth complete game.

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 7, Corona del Mar 6--Paul Jones had three hits, including a single in the bottom of the sixth, to score Nick Lewis from second to break a 6-6 tie for host Newport Harbor (8-11, 2-8).

Santa Margarita 10, El Toro 7--Santa Margarita broke a 7-7 tie, scoring three runs in the seventh to beat El Toro (15-5-1, 7-2-1), ranked fourth in the county. Craig Harrison hit a three-run home run and Justin Parker had three RBIs for the Eagles (11-8, 5-5).

Travis Senik had three hits and an RBI and Clemente Bonilla had two hits and two RBIs for El Toro.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 12, Mission Viejo 3--Rik Currier had three hits and five RBIs and winning pitcher Pat Versluis (6-0) gave up two hits over six innings for the visiting Cougars (15-3, 8-2).

Mater Dei 7, San Clemente 4--Junior Mike Kolbach had a single, double, home run and four RBIs for top-ranked Mater Dei (17-2, 10-0).

Trabuco Hills 8, Dana Hills 6--The Mustangs (9-9-1, 4-5-1) scored five runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, sparked by Danny Alvarez’s pinch-hit RBI single. Billy Ortiz had a three-run homer in the sixth as Trabuco Hills overcame a 5-0 deficit in the final two innings.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 3, Huntington Beach 2--Christian Popoff hit a two-run home run in the fifth and winning pitcher Ron Aparicio (6-2) struck out 11 for Edison (8-11, 5-5).

Esperanza 4, Marina 2--Bo Bryant hit a bases-loaded single in the fourth to put Esperanza ahead, 2-0, and a throwing error on the same play allowed two more runners to score for the Aztecs (11-9, 7-3).
