Obituaries : * Patrick Hilliard; Navy Veteran of Three Wars

Patrick Hilliard, who served in three wars during his 30 years in the Navy, died Wednesday in Oxnard after a long illness. He was 82.

Born in Kendall, Mont., Hilliard moved to California, spending his final 36 years in Ventura County. He and his father were gold prospectors in the Death Valley area in the early 1900s and established several mining operations.

Hilliard served in the Navy in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired in 1971. He worked in one of the first Seabee battalions commissioned by the Navy during World War II. His military awards included the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He is survived by sons Donald and Andrew of Oxnard, and Walter of Chico, and daughter Chelsey Hurst of Cedar Lake, Ind.

Memorial services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura, with Pastor John Huffman of Southcoast Fellowship of Ventura officiating.
