A school bus driver suffered broken ribs Friday morning after she leaped aboard a rolling bus that then crashed into a storage building at school district headquarters, police said.

Carol Leach, 56, of Anaheim, broke three ribs and bruised a lung when the 84-seat bus smacked into the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District building just after 7 a.m., police said.

Leach had been performing a routine walk-around inspection of her vehicle when it lurched forward and rolled about 65 feet before hitting the bus-yard shed, police spokeswoman Corinne Loomis said.

No children were in the area, Loomis said. The cause of the accident is under investigation. The bus was in reverse gear and the engine off when it began to roll, Loomis said.

Leach, who has been a driver for the district for 15 years, was listed in stable condition Friday at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
