From Staff and Wire Reports

Sterling Marlin repeatedly rallied to win the Winston Select 500 Sunday at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

Three times, Marlin made pit stops that left his Morgan-McClure Chevrolet Monte Carlo far back in the 43-car field. Each time, he rallied as he held off Daytona 500 winner Dale Jarrett over the final seven laps.

In one of several crashes in the race, Bill Elliott broke his left thigh bone after spinning coming out of a turn. Elliott was conscious when airlifted from the infield care center to Birmingham for surgery.

He complained of back pain and was airlifted to a Birmingham hospital. A CAT scan and X-rays were negative, and Craven was in stable condition in intensive care.

Former Michigan State Coach George Perles knew about at least some of the grade-changing going on in the football program, the father of a former player told the Detroit News. Clarence Jackson, the father of former Spartan defensive lineman Aaron Jackson, said he called Perles during the 1992 and 1994 seasons complaining that his son was not attending classes and yet was still allowed to play. The NCAA infractions committee is scheduled to review the case when it meets June 1-3.
