Expos’ Fletcher, Segui Slam Rockies, 21-9

Darrin Fletcher and David Segui each hit grand slams Sunday and the Montreal Expos set a team record for runs in a game with a 21-9 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Denver.

F.P. Santangelo, starting in place of injured center fielder Rondell White, added career bests with four hits and five runs batted in. Segui finished with a career-best six RBIs and Fletcher’s five matched his personal high.

The Expos, who had scored 19 runs six times in their 28-year history, broke an 11-inning scoreless streak when they sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run first inning against Bryan Rekar. Montreal had a season-high 20 hits.

Rekar retired the game’s first hitter but didn’t get another out until pitcher Kirk Rueter’s sacrifice bunt. What happened in between was a pitcher’s nightmare.

With one out, the Expos loaded the bases before Rekar walked Segui and forced in a run. Fletcher followed with his fourth home run of the season, and Santangelo hit his first homer two pitches later.

Rekar then walked Dave Silvestri, who scored on a two-out single by Mark Grudzielanek, who finished with five hits. The inning came to an end when Mike Lansing flied out.

Rekar, who made 14 starts as a rookie last season, ended up giving up 11 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings before leaving to a barrage of boos. He was optioned to triple-A Colorado Springs about two hours later.

“He was relieved when we told him [he was being sent down],” pitching coach Frank Funk said.

Manager Don Baylor said, “His confidence probably sank to its all-time low.”

The Expos led, 14-2, after scoring two runs in both the second and third innings and three more on Santangelo’s bases-loaded double in the fifth.

Montreal added six more in the eighth against Mike Munoz on a two-out RBI pinch double by Andy Stankiewicz, a run-scoring single by reliever Dave Veres and Segui’s third career grand slam.

San Francisco 10, Florida 4--Matt Williams and Mark Carreon hit successive home runs in the first inning as the Giants thrashed Marlin starter Chris Hammond at San Francisco.

The Giants scored five times in the first and added four runs in the second against Hammond, who gave up nine hits and nine runs in one-plus innings.

San Francisco starter William VanLandingham won his first game of the season by limiting the Marlins to one run and two hits over seven innings.

Barry Bonds and Robby Thompson both had three hits and scored twice for the Giants, who put infielder Shawon Dunston on the 15-day disabled because of a groin strain.

Houston 3, San Diego 2--At San Diego, Darryl Kile held the Padres to five hits in eight innings and struck out a season-high nine, including Tony Gwynn, who had not struck out in 69 previous plate appearances this season.

Derek Bell had two hits and drove in two runs, including a run- scoring double in the eighth inning.

Sean Bergman gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings, matching his career high with nine strikeouts for San Diego.

New York 7, Pittsburgh 5--The Mets’ Bobby Jones gave up five runs and seven hits in 8 1/3 innings, and John Franco got two outs for his fourth save at Pittsburgh.

Jones struck out five and walked two while lowering his earned-run average to 7.71.

Rico Brogna’s two-run single finished off a three-run sixth inning as the Mets, down, 2-0, in the third, rallied against Pittsburgh for the second consecutive game.
