Lockheed Martin Unit to Lay Off 13% of Work Force: Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems Co. will lay off 1,200 to 1,500 employees because of budget cuts in the F-22 fighter jet program and reduced production of C-130 transport planes. The unit employs 10,000 workers at its Marietta, Ga., plant and about 300 at plants in Charleston, S.C., and Clarksburg, W.Va. Parent Lockheed Martin Corp. is the nation’s biggest defense contractor, employing about 165,000 people. All but about a dozen of the layoffs will be at the Marietta plant, a spokesman said. The layoffs will begin in two months and will be split between salaried and hourly employees. The layoffs complete a plan announced two years ago to cut 2,000 jobs because of defense spending cuts.
