X-RATED LAW PASSED

Gardena is cracking down on its adult-oriented entertainment businesses with a new law that requires clubs to get background checks for performers and install better lighting in parking lots to deter crime.

The new law, which goes into effect May 23, also requires new adult-oriented businesses to be located at least 1,000 feet from schools, parks, playgrounds, churches, bars and other adult-oriented businesses and 500 feet from homes.

The law is meant to solve several problems generated by a strip of county land annexed by Gardena in 1990. The area, called the Rosecrans corridor, has three strip bars and an adult video store. Before the annexation, Gardena had no adult-oriented businesses in the city and no city laws regulating them.

“We have been concerned with criminal problems in the area,” said City Councilman Paul Tsukahara, who pushed the city to write a law governing these businesses. “We’ve had problems with drugs, alcohol and shootings. It gives the whole neighborhood a negative image.”
