SWEET SCENT: A group of Oxnard firefighters has developed, no fooling, Donut cologne (B1). Its symbol is a lawman-style badge with “10-7” emblazoned on it. . . . Cop radio code for “out of service,” 10-7 is what an officer might proclaim while pulling off at a pastry shop. . . . Included in the packaging is a note that the product means no disrespect; “it is simply an attempt to look at the lighter side of law enforcement.”
DISASTER CENTRAL: It’s not the most peppy of Internet sites--one section intones that “our risk of major disasters is greater than ever before”--but the Ventura County chapter of the Red Cross is online with a World Wide Web page. . . . Assembled gratis by Ross Hubbard of Ventura County Internet Advertising, the site is a resource usually available only to major city chapters. “It’s so new, it’s not something that’s been used in the past,” said Brian Bolton, local executive director. . . . ROUGH JOB: While office drones pine for spring skies, Emma Cobis (above) is strolling Ventura’s beachfront Promenade. And getting paid to do it. . . . Cobis and six others work for the city’s Ambassadors program, begun last summer to greet tourists, pick up trash, operate two parking lots and roust vagrants. “They’re just kind of a helping hand down there for whatever the need might be,” parks director Bill Byerts said. . . . Officials also hope that the uniformed presence helps keep the peace. “People have already told me they’re glad to see less gangs, less graffiti,” Cobis said.
INDUBITABLY: Even with the extra e, the name Thousand Oaks Towne Center never sounded Range Rover-ish enough for residents near the upscale new shopping center. . . . So developer Rick Caruso has changed it to The Promenade at Westlake. . . . “It’s just the tone of the name, what it connotes,” Caruso said. “Towne Center . . . connotes more of a typical shopping center.” It’s also the working name for the commercial area next to the Civic Arts Plaza.
