Shades of Blue: Blues singer Barbara Morrison, above, knows that there’s more to success than putting over a good song. You have to know how to beguile people into giving you jobs. . . . And from Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, the saxophonist who helped her get started, to Ray Charles, for whom she will open this summer, Morrison, who plays the Valley on Tuesday, has done just that (F15).
Books: Why do weird men collect books? Why are books with mistakes in them worth more than corrected versions? Columnist Pat Biederman ponders these and other literary questions raised by a visit to the Burbank Book Fair (F1A).
Mayoral Munching: What does a multimillionaire-turned-politician eat? Here’s Mayor Richard Riordan’s menu from a daylong trip to the Valley that included no less than three eating opportunities. For breakfast: crepes filled with eggs and mushrooms. Midmorning snack: bagels with cream cheese. . . . Lunch: a McDonald’s meal and cookies (B1).
He Cares: How far will the mayor go to show the Valley he cares? At Wednesday’s breakfast appearance, a woman complained that she sweeps debris to the curb on street cleaning day, but the truck is often a no-show. . . . The mayor quipped that his Valley aide would be over at 5 in the morning to pick it up himself.
