David Cone, the New York Yankee pitcher hospitalized because of an aneurysm in his right shoulder, is likely to be sidelined at least a month, and possibly the season.

The Yankees have not confirmed if the right-hander will have surgery despite reports saying he will be operated on immediately. The club said it must first know the test results before saying if Cone, 33, will pitch again this year.

“I don’t think they’re expecting him to be back in the next month or so,” Manager Joe Torre said. “I think that’s safe to say.

“As far as him pitching again [this year]. I know they haven’t made any promises as to when to look for him. To me, that’s the last of our concerns.”

A Major League Baseball spokesman denied a published report that he wrote the apology attributed Tuesday to controversial Cincinnati Red owner Marge Schott. The Dayton (Ohio) Daily News reported that the statement, in which Schott apologized for insensitive remarks she made about Adolf Hitler, was written by Richard Levin, the executive director of Major League Baseball’s public relations department. “That’s incorrect, absolutely wrong,” Levin said. “I didn’t see Marge sit down and write it, but it came to us through Cincinnati. When they were through, they sent it to us.”. . . . Felix Fermin, released by the Seattle Mariners last month, signed a minor league contract with the Yankees and has been assigned to the team’s minor league training base in Tampa, Fla.
