A 4-year-old boy who nearly drowned in a community center pool was in fair condition Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Benjamin Hyter was playing near a pool in the 200 block of Avenida de los Fundadores about 4 p.m. Wednesday when his nanny decided to get some water, sheriff’s Lt. Jay Mendez said. The boy was found moments later in about 5 feet of water.

Two nurses administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived, Mendez said. Benjamin was taken to Children’s Hospital at Mission, where he was initially in critical condition. But on Thursday, his vital signs stabilized and his condition was upgraded to fair, the hospital spokeswoman said.
