Eight to Be Laid Off by School District
Eight La Habra City School District employees soon will be out of work.
District trustees voted for the layoffs this week because the positions were part of a three-year, state-funded program that expires this summer.
Working for the Primary Intervention Program, the employees helped students in kindergarten through second grade who had trouble adjusting to school.
The program at the district’s El Cerrito, Las Lomas and Ladera Palma elementary schools costs $64,000 to run each year. It has been administered by the state Department of Mental Health, which has provided money since 1993.
“The program has been real effective and we will continue to address the problems faced by children who have trouble with the social amenities of learning how to get along in school through other district programs,” said Martha Baxendell, La Habra City’s personnel director of classified employees.
She said the workers who will lose their jobs on June 14 will be eligible to apply for other positions that will be filled before the next school year begins.
