State Sen. Newton R. Russell (R-Glendale) was in good condition after open-heart surgery Saturday, a spokeswoman said.
The three-hour operation was performed at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento. Russell’s chief of staff, Kay Lentz, said the senator is expected to return to work in three to four weeks.
“It went without a hitch,” she said. “The doctor was very pleased.”
Russell, 68, represents the 21st District, which includes Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena. His district also encompasses Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Atwater Village and Eagle Rock. A state senator since 1974, Russell will leave the Senate after this year because of term limits.
