Mail Carriers Collect About 25 Tons of Food
Mail carriers across Ventura County found themselves unusually bogged down at the end of their routes this weekend.
As participants in a food drive for Food Share Inc. of Oxnard, the postal workers dropped off letters, magazines and junk mail and got something in exchange Saturday: tons and tons of canned and packaged food left on front stoops for them by residents.
The fifth annual food drive was organized by the National Assn. of Letter Carriers and will benefit hungry Ventura County residents. Last year, the event brought in 27 tons of food, and participants were trying to beat that number.
They narrowly missed their mark, collecting about 25 tons. But that still seemed like plenty of food to organizer Jim Mangis.
“There is an amazing variety,” Mangis said. “I just pulled out a jug of maple syrup. We’ve got wild blueberry muffin mix, pork and beans. I just saw some smoked salmon go by.”
