Jazz trumpeter and Ojai resident Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band will perform May 31 in Thousand Oaks to benefit the band and pageantry programs at Newbury Park High School.

Ferguson, a three-time Grammy nominee, will perform his hit recording “Gonna Fly Now,” the theme from the motion picture “Rocky,” along with cuts from his new album, “These Cats Can Swing.”

In addition to bebop, jazz, funk and swing tunes, Ferguson and his Big Boppers will also perform fusion pieces such as “Sweet Baba Suite,” which mixes the sound of classical Indian ragas with American big-band jazz.

A New York Times critic once said of a Ferguson performance: “Even when he rose to some customary squeals, it was done with such rhythmic and melodic grace that he seemed to be dancing on the squealing.”

The 8 p.m. performance will be at the Probst Theatre at the Civic Arts Plaza. Tickets are $10, $25 and $35. For tickets, call (805) 449-ARTS.
