Police were searching Wednesday for a 35-year-old Long Beach man who they said stabbed his estranged girlfriend in the neck during an afternoon visit to her office, then fled as she screamed for help.

The couple, who have a young daughter and had lived together in Rancho Santa Margarita for several years, broke up a few days ago, and Ramon Rodriguez, the man sought by police, has been staying in the Long Beach area, Newport Beach Sgt. John Desmond said.

Rodriguez was visiting 27-year-old Jodi Breedlove at the high-rise office where she works in the 4000 block of MacArthur Boulevard when the stabbing occurred shortly after 4 p.m., Desmond said.

“They were conversing in the lobby,” he said. “He embraces her and as he’s hugging her, he pulls out an 8-inch knife and stabs her in the neck.”

Breedlove, who still lives in Rancho Santa Margarita, suffered a superficial wound. The couple then struggled over the knife before Rodriguez struck Breedlove and ran away, Desmond said.

Breedlove works as a support services technician in the building, police said. She was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian for treatment and was released Wednesday evening.

Rodriguez is about 5-foot-6, with a thin build. Witnesses told police he fled in a dirty white Nissan Sentra, license plate 2TXU428. The car is a two-door hatchback with damage to its right rear.

Police ask that anyone with information about Rodriguez’s whereabouts call (800) 550-6273.
