Legal Fees May Cost Clintons $5 Million

President Clinton and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, may be billed for $5 million or more in legal fees as he fights a sexual-harassment suit and responds to Whitewater inquiries, according to his annual financial disclosure statement.

The statement, released Thursday, shows the Clintons could owe from $1 million to $5 million to Williams & Connolly, a Washington law firm, and $500,000 to $1 million to Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom of New York.

The report gives only ranges of assets, liabilities and incomes.

Former Arkansas state employee Paula Corbin Jones alleges then-Gov. Clinton asked her to perform a sexual act in a hotel room in Arkansas. He denies any wrongdoing. The Clintons also face an investigation into their investment in the Whitewater real estate development.

The disclosure statement includes 73 pages of names and addresses of contributors to the president’s legal defense fund.

The statement also shows that the first family has assets of between $811,017 and $1,861,100.

The report, far less detailed than the federal income tax forms released by the Clintons last month, also showed that last year Clinton accepted a variety of gifts, including two saxophones, numerous golf clubs and a cartoon sketch of himself given by movie director Steven Spielberg.
