Siamese twin boys were born Thursday, the third set of such twins born in Southern California in the last four months.

The boys, joined at the chest and upper abdomen, were born to Andrea and Roman Moreno of Tijuana at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista. They were taken to the infant intensive care unit at UC San Diego Medical Center.

A hospital spokeswoman said the Moreno twins, named Hever Aron and Roman Alan, weighed 12 1/2 pounds and are healthy. No decision has been made by doctors on whether to attempt separation surgery.

On May 1, Siamese twin girls were born at Loma Linda University Medical Center in San Bernardino County to a couple from Prescott, Ariz., Jeff and Michelle Roderick. The twins, Shawna Leilani and Janelle Kiana, are awaiting surgery to separate their livers and abdomens.

On Jan. 12, conjoined twin girls, Sarah and Sarahi Morales, were born in Tijuana and taken to Childrens Hospital in San Diego, where separation surgery was performed a week later. Sarah survived the delicate surgery but Sarahi died of heart failure within minutes.

Experts in the field of conjoined twins say there is no evidence that the occurrence of such twins is increasing from the historic rate of about once in every 50,000 births.
