GOP Women Join Others in Need

* Re “Prominent GOP Women Seek to Expand Their Ranks,” May 11:

It was encouraging to read that three prominent Republican political figures, Marian Bergeson, Marilyn Brewer and Haydee Tillotson, openly acknowledge that affirmative action is needed to get more Republican women elected to public office.

Their efforts to get more money in the hands of Republican women candidates, because of their gender, is commendable inasmuch as the disparity is so evident in the ranks of Republican elected officials.

Coincidentally, on the front page was an article reporting on a ruling that the Newport-Mesa Unified School District had discriminated against Latino students by changing the boundaries for Adams Elementary School in Costa Mesa. Surely these prominent Republicans will agree that affirmative action because of race is also needed in some instances.

We do not need to discriminate against any segment of our population as we take affirmative action to ensure that other segments are treated fairly.
