Mishap Keeps Sony in the Dark

The studio whose big summer movie is called “Cable Guy” was unplugged Monday.

Sony Pictures Entertainment said its entire studio lot in Culver City was shut down due to a power outage caused by a mishap at an outside electrical transformer.

A Sony spokesman said two birds apparently flew into the transformer at 5:57 a.m., shorting it out and causing the blackout.

Employees were sent home while the problem was being fixed. Repairs were expected to be wrapped up late Monday.

The Sony lot on Washington Boulevard, formerly the historic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lot, is home to the Columbia and TriStar studios, as well as numerous corporate executives and producers.

Sources said one of the birds died but the other survived.
