Six Ventura County high school students are scheduled to receive National Merit Scholarships today, bringing the total number of students in the county who have obtained the prestigious award this year to 19.

About 5,600 scholarship winners nationwide have been chosen. The list will grow to 6,900 by the end of July.

Merit scholarships are awarded to students with the highest scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test, a college entrance exam. Students are also judged on their grades, extracurricular activities and recommendations of school officials.
