‘The Four Postmen’ Doesn’t Deliver

Share

What will Mick and Keith say about this?

The Four Postmen bill themselves as “the world’s greatest rock group,” but based on their self-titled show at the Hudson Theatre, the tag is obviously meant as a joke. Right?

Straight from the throw-something-at-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks school, “The Four Postmen” is a raggedy, smirking spoof of rock bands--something no one has ever attempted before. Hey, that’s another joke.

The trouble is, the Postmen do a lot more talking than singing, and what they say doesn’t happen to be very funny. The basic schtick involves trio Ken Weiler, Matthew Kaminsky and Stefan Marks (the fourth Postman is missing in action) wearing mail uniforms and touring a band with bassist The Bone (Brett Pearsons) and drummer The Dog (Geoff Dunbar).

No director is credited, which proves an unfortunate oversight. A very long and meandering setup involving a persistent girlfriend steals the bulk of the show, which is peppered with wan, sitcom-style exchanges (“Could I talk to you for a second?” “Sure, but that won’t leave us much time!”). Their devotedly silly songs about vampires and hairball-coughing cats may raise a smile or two, but one guesses that “The Four Postmen” poses no threat to Hootie.
