THE LIVES OF WHALES AND DOLPHINS by Richard C. Connor and Dawn Mickelwaite Peterson (Holt: $15.95; 233 pp.). The second volume in a series on animal behavior from the American Museum of National History, “Whales and Dolphins” avoids the touchy-feely sensibility that mars many books about cetaceans. It focuses primarily on dolphins, as more research has been done on these appealing animals than on the larger baleen and sperm whales. The most interesting chapters deal with echolocation and other senses cetaceans possess but humans lack.
