In three previous games against Scotland, the United States had been outscored, 11-0, so the Americans’ 2-1 victory Sunday in an exhibition was satisfying.

“This was a very significant victory for us,” U.S. Coach Steve Sampson said. “The game had great meaning for them, heading into the European Championship, and this win showed just how far U.S. soccer has come.”

Cobi Jones broke a 1-1 tie with a goal with 18 minutes to play.

“It was a poor Scottish performance and we hate to lose,” Scotland Coach Craig Brown said. “We feel we can compete far better with the U.S. than we did today.”

The United States, playing for the first time since Jan. 21, fell behind in the ninth minute when Scott Booth scored.

Four minutes later, Eric Wynalda tied the score with a penalty kick, his fifth goal in five games and his 23rd for the United States.
