Minutes after Marquis Grissom went deep to finish another Atlanta comeback, Jim Leyland went off on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Grissom hit a three-run homer in the 13th inning off Dan Miceli after the Atlanta bullpen couldn’t hold a two-run lead for Greg Maddux, and the Braves beat the Pirates, 6-3, Sunday at Pittsburgh.

Javy Lopez hit two solo homers for the Braves, who won their ninth in 11 games. It was only the second victory for Atlanta in five extra-inning games this season and only their fifth in their last 17 over two seasons.

Terrell Wade (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for his first major league victory. The Pirates lost for the 15th time in 19 games, leading to a postgame clubhouse blowup, one of Leyland’s most explosive during his 11 seasons as manager.

Leyland screamed so loudly for 10 minutes that the tirade could be heard outside the clubhouse door. A malfunctioning alarm system compounded the situation by locking several coaches and players out of the clubhouse for several minutes.

Leyland, still agitated, made only a few tight-lipped comments before cutting off his postgame remarks.

“We had plenty of opportunities to win the game and we didn’t get it done,” he said. “I don’t want to hear anything about battling back. . . . The only time you battle is when you battle and win.”

New York 1, San Diego 0--Bobby Jones scattered five hits in eight innings to win his fifth consecutive decision and Bernard Gilkey homered in the first off Sean Bergman (2-5), stopping the Padres’ four-game winning streak at New York.

Jones (5-1) struck out four, walked one and gave up only one runner to reach third.

“I’ve got to get the job done, regardless of what the situation is,” Jones said. “My job is to go to the mound every fifth day.”

John Franco finished for his ninth save in 12 chances.

Gilkey, who hit his 11th homer with two outs in the first, has nine RBIs in his last six games.

Philadelphia 10, San Francisco 1--Former Giant Terry Mulholland hit a double and a run-scoring single to lead the Phillies in a rout at San Francisco.

“It was strange actually being able to talk to those guys as I ran the bases,” said Mulholland, who pitched 7 2/3 strong innings and went two for four.

Mulholland (5-3) won his second consecutive start and improved his road record to 4-1. He gave up one run and six hits, struck out two and walked one.

It was Mulholland’s first start in San Francisco since the Giants released him last season, when he was 5-13 with a 5.80 ERA.

Todd Zeile hit his fourth career grand slam, connecting off Jose Bautista in a six-run ninth for his second slam at Candlestick Park. Mike Benjamin hit a two-run homer in the inning and reliever Ricky Bottalico doubled for his first major league hit. Bottalico followed Mulholland with perfect relief for his 14th save.

Houston 7, Chicago 2--Jeff Bagwell drove in three runs and Shane Reynolds (7-3) gave up two runs and four hits in seven innings as Houston completed its first three-game home sweep of Chicago in seven seasons.

With Chicago leading, 2-1, in the sixth, Reynolds singled off Frank Castillo (1-7), and Craig Biggio was hit by a pitch for 11th time this season, tops in the majors. Bagwell, who had hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth, then doubled to left-center for a 3-2 lead.

Derek Bell was walked intentionally and Orlando Miller’s two-run double chased Castillo. Rick Wilkins flied out against Doug Jones, James Mouton hit a run-scoring single and Ricky Gutierrez followed with an RBI double.

Reynolds struck out 10 and has 22 in his last two starts. Castillo has lost five consecutive starts.

Florida 8, St. Louis 2--Jeff Conine homered twice and Gary Sheffield hit his 16th homer as the Marlins stopped the Cardinals’ five-game winning streak at Miami.

Conine, five for 39 in his previous 11 games, went three for three with three RBIs. He hit a two-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the fifth for an 8-0 lead against Donovan Osborne (3-3).

David Weathers (2-0) gave up seven hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. The game was called with no outs in the top of the eighth after a rain delay of 1:17.

Sheffield went three for four with a single, a two-run double and a two-run homer. Rookie Edgar Renteria had a double and a triple--his first hits at Joe Robbie Stadium.
