City Sponsoring 3-Day Salute to Recreation

With food, fireworks, entertainment and elephants, the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will host the 14th annual “Salute to Recreation” festival this weekend at Northridge Park.

Starting Friday evening, the three-day event will feature a street parade, a carnival, an arts and crafts fair, pony and elephant rides and continuous live entertainment on four stages.

On Friday, radio station KRLA-AM (1110) will sponsor a salsa concert headlined by Tierra. Saturday’s performers will include Zen Cowboys, The Extinct, Super Nova and Weapon of Choice, sponsored by KLSX-FM (97.1).

The festival will conclude Sunday with the fifth annual “Chili Music Festival,” featuring a chili cook-off and live music from The Rambler, Ellie Mae’s Biscuits, Annie Harvey and Lightnin’ Willie and the Poor Boys.

“Each year it gets better and we strive to make it better,” said Recreation and Parks staff member Wendy Wilkinson.

Northridge Park is at 10058 Reseda Blvd. The festival will run from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. For information, call (818) 756-8060.
