* 1978: Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton and James B. and Susan McDougal buy 200 acres in northern Arkansas.

1979: Whitewater Development Corp. formed. * Clintons and McDougals each own 50%.

1986: McDougal ousted as president of Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan but remains as owner. 1989: Madison Guaranty fails at cost to taxpayers of up to $65 million.

* March 1992: Clinton’s presidential campaign releases report saying Clintons did nothing improper in their Whitewater dealings with the McDougals.

* Nov. 8: Clinton elected president. One month later, Clintons sell their Whitewater share to James McDougal. They record a $1,000 capital gain on their tax form.

Jan. 12, 1994: Bowing to intensifying political pressure over his Whitewater dealings, * Clinton asks for independent counsel.

* March 22: Little Rock businessman David Hale, seeking plea bargain in a fraud case, accues Clinton of pressuring him to make $300,000 loan in 1986 that would benefit Clinton and James McDougal.

Aug. 5: Kenneth W. Starr appointed to take over from original independent counsel Robert B. Fiske.

Aug. 17, 1995: McDougals and Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker indicted by Whitewater grand jury on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from transactions dating from 1985 to 1987.

March 4, 1996: Trial begins for Tucker and the McDougals.

March 25: Hale sentenced to 28 months in prison for defrauding Small Business Administration.

* April 1: Hale testifies against Tucker and the McDougals. He claims Clinton benefited from the $300,000 loan.

* April 28: Clinton gives videotaped testimony denying that he pressured Hale to make loan to Susan McDougal.

May 18: Jury begins deliberations.

May 28: Jury convicts all three defendants.
