The Rev. Canon Lewis Bohler Jr., 68, who is retiring at the end of June after 35 years as rector of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in the West Adams area of Los Angeles, will be honored at a banquet June 20 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The $100-a-plate dinner for the priest will also serve as a fund-raiser to offset costs of rebuilding the church sanctuary, which sustained $500,000 in damages from the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The church building was constructed in 1925.

As one of the few African American Episcopal priests in Southern California during the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, Bohler participated in dialogues and demonstrations in Los Angeles and made two trips to Selma, Ala., in 1965 during the civil rights marches.

A longtime member of the Los Angeles County Board of Education, Bohler also served on the State Board of Education and on the Los Angeles Unified School District board, a spokesman said.
