Obituaries : Ray ‘Scotty’ Lowe; 48-Year County Resident

Ray “Scotty” Lowe, a longtime Ventura resident, died Tuesday in a Ventura hospital after a brief illness. He was 78.

Lowe, who was born March 11, 1918, in Chariton, Iowa, moved from Iowa to Ventura County 48 years ago.

He worked for Matilija Water Co. for 25 years before retiring in 1973.

Lowe was honored for his military service during World War II with four Bronze Battle Stars and a Purple Heart. He served in the Army for four years in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters, and was wounded on the front lines in Algiers. While in the Army, he served for a year as a guard for Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

He was a member of the VFW Walter Chaffee Post 1679 of Ventura. He also enjoyed sports and sporting events, and was an avid follower of local high school teams and sports, particularly the Ventura High School Cougars and track meets, said his daughter, Linda Lowe of Ventura.

“When I was a child, if anything was going on, he took everybody in the neighborhood,” his daughter said. “If we were going swimming, he took everybody.”

In addition to his daughter, Lowe is survived by his wife of 49 years, Wildes “Willie” Lowe of Ventura; two sisters, Ruth Chappell of Pensacola, Fla., and Elizabeth Bolton of Bowling Green, Ky., and a brother, Paul Lowe of Chariton.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura. The Rev. David Hall of Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
