Council Considers City Fee Increases

Hoping to recover the cost of processing various requests and applications, the City Council is reviewing many of the fees it now charges residents and builders.

These fees are charged to those requesting services from the Camarillo Planning Department, Engineering Department and city clerk’s office, under the proposal that will be considered later this month.

Finance Director Anita Bingham recommended the changes on Wednesday. A formal vote of the fee increases is scheduled for the council’s June 19 meeting.

“It is the goal of the city and the sanitary district that the fees and charges for utilities and other services keep up with the cost of providing the services,” Bingham said.

Some examples of the higher suggested fees include appeals to the Planning Commission or City Council, which would rise from $500 to $550; and meeting agenda mailings, which are recommended to rise from $50 to $55 a year.

“It’s just a yearly adjustment,” Mayor David M. Smith said.

Not all of the fees now charged to city residents and developers are recommended for increase. Bingham recommends that several fees be lowered.

For example, a flood plain permit from the engineering department now costs $1,250. Under the new fee schedule, that would dip to $1,190.
