Political seers in Washington will be scanning the Sunday papers for photographs from a fund-raiser tonight for Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.) to see how many--if any--include retired Gen. Colin L. Powell.

Presumed GOP presidential nominee Sen. Bob Dole also will be attending the affair, aimed at helping Warner survive a strong challenge from conservative foes in a primary Tuesday. The fund-raiser will be held at the McLean, Va., home of lobbyist and Powell chum Kenneth M. Duberstein.

Some Dole allies have made little secret of their desire to see the charismatic Powell join the Kansas senator on the GOP presidential ticket. Dole himself has said he’d like to meet with the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to discuss the campaign, but Powell has said repeatedly that he has absolutely no interest in the vice presidential slot.

One of the organizers of the event said the main problem he faces is that each of the three main participants wants a different photograph to emerge from the dinner.

“Dole wants two people in the picture; Warner wants three people in the picture, and Powell wants no picture at all,” he said.
